We were hoping to visit the museum on Wednesday morning but found it closed. A man approached us while we were looking in the windows, saying that the Museum has been closed for many years due to lack of funding and staff. Several of the local Elders who had previously been involved "have gone walkabout." It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed following the trails to Mersey View Point, and around the top of Mersey Bluff and down to Back Beach. Along the way we spotted the old Mersey Bluff Cemetery, which is well worth a look. There are gravestones dating back to the 1800s. The cemetery is located amongst the trees just below the west side of the caravan park. My two star rating is not for the museum itself (which is closed), but to reflect the enjoyment of visiting the attractions in the immediate vicinity.
Beautiful museum nestled under old trees at the top of the bluff call in have a look at some of the indigenous art maybe pick up a souvenir from the gift store and learn about the culture from Tassie indigenous .really friendly sure to please and worth seeing
Happy it was open when we stopped by! The man running it was so friendly and insightful. The museum was good and we purchased some lovely items in the gift shop.
To appreciate and learn about a culture, it has to be accessible. Nobody seems interested in keeping this site open. Maybe the building could be repurposed for something more popular. Pity. We settlers want to learn about the first Australians, but nobody seems bothered enough to keep the place open. Maybe an indigenous group could help out?
The place was not open to the public, I wish it was. I did my own tour and it was a very emotional experience knowing that these families were massacred on their own land. I hope one day these people can heal. There are artifacts of life as it once was before colonisation.
