My partner, myself and another couple stayed at the Tasman Backpackers for 1.5months. We paid the $165 per person per week rent on time every week, tidied up after ourselves, didn't make excessive noise and respected the property.Wanting more space, however, we were honest with Ben and Hannah when we told them that we were looking for a shared house in which to live. We paid for a couple of days of rent instead of a full week in case we found a place and needed to move out. We told Ben and Hannah that we'd let them know how it went after the viewing and would give sufficient notice that we were leaving when it was required and pay any extra days so they would not lose out. At 5pm two days later we went to pay the rest of the week's rent because we were staying a little while longer as our rental didn't work out. It was at this point that we were told that our room was already sold and that we had to be out by 10am the next day because, "100% of the time when someone goes to look at a shared/rental house they move out." We reminded Ben and Hannah that we had told them that we would give them notice if we were going to leave but were told that there was "nothing they could do." The couple we were moving in with weren't even told by Ben and Hannah but heard from us. We didn't even get an apology. At the height of the season/summer (late December to end of January) in Devonport, finding accommodation is very difficult as the backpackers is full, shared houses are taken, rentals properties usually can't be let for 3 months or less and even caravan parks, Air BnB and hotels have little space. I know this because we had to take an emergency day off work (losing a day's wages) the day immediately after to find a place to live to be turned away again and again and again.We had nowhere to go. There was no warning.Unfortunately, backpackers are often exploited and used only to make money, which is exactly what happened to us. We initially thought Ben and Hannah were a nice couple but we learned the hard way that the welfare of the people in the hostel is not their priority.Moreover, we learned that Ben had begun to tell people that they needed to commit to a minimum of 3 months of living at and working through the hostel. There are times when there's plenty of work around and then there is nothing, which is not their fault as it is based on the farmers' requirements, but don't go expecting to be employed through them the entire duration of your stay.If you're coming to Devonport to work, your best option is to find a shared house before you come - the rent is cheaper, you're not tied to the hostel for work, you don't have to share two small kitchens with 100 other people, have 4min showers, have the promise of 'bar' (which is actually a fridge from which they sell over-priced booze - buy a box yourself and put it in the communal fridge) and pay ridiculous prices. Look on Gumtree or Facebook for alternative accommodation; alternatively, if you only plan to stay a couple of days while finding work and more permanent accommodation you can go to Molly Malone's, The Alexander Hotel or Air BnB. You can find work at Costa or use the WikiFarms app to look up local farms and find your own work.

Why even have a contact phone and 'office hours' when you're incapable of answering? Have tried multiple times over the day to make contact, not once has the phone been answered. Dissapointed and more than mildly irritated. Now seeking elsewhere for my accommodation.

When the hostel is full or almost, the owner does't care about new coming people , he not even open the door to them and he prefer drinking with the guests. I remember about a guy who came by bike from Launceston,under the rain, who couldn't go into the hostel because the owner was drinking and he didn't want to meet people.
